Number One Magazine is currently accepting submissions for Volume 65 (and the Lena Vaughn and John Latosi awards for visual art/creative writing)
Submissions are accepted until December 1 for our annual print issue, available in the spring. We accept submissions of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, plays, screenplays, photography, and visual artwork.You must be a current student at UMKC in order to submit. Submissions can be e-mailed to numberonemagazine@gmail.com.
This year's theme: Propaganda! Your submission does not need to be propaganda-themed to be considered for the magazine, but Volume 65 will feature a special section for prose, poetry, and artwork with a "propaganda" angle.

Number One Magazine offers awards for UMKC students to promote and reward
the creation of exemplary creative writing and visual artwork/photography:
§
The
$100 John Latosi Award for Creative Writing (in memory of John
Latosi, a poet and journalist from New York). Presented for the best
submission each year of short fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry (three
to seven poems), a screenplay, or a stage play.
§
The
$100 Lena Vaughn Award for the Visual Arts (in memory of Lena Vaughn, a prolific painter from Iowa). Presented for the best image or group of images submitted each year.
Guidelines
1.
Please include the following information
with your entry: your complete name, address, e-mail/phone number,
award category, title of your work, and genre/medium. Writing
submissions should be attached to your e-mail as Microsoft Word
documents. Artwork submissions (photography—in color or black and
white, painting, drawing, graphic design, etc.) should be attached as
high-resolution images (print quality: JPG, PNG, or TIFF).
2. Only UMKC students (graduate and undergraduate)
are eligible. Current members of the Number One staff are not eligible.
3. Previously published work and simultaneous
submissions are welcome—just keep us informed.
4. All award submissions will be considered
for publication in Number One Magazine. Submissions received this year before this announcement will also be considered for these awards.
5. One winner for each award will be announced
in January following the submission deadline. $100 in prize money will be paid to each winner upon publication in
Number One Magazine. The winner of the John Latosi Award will be
invited to give a reading of his or her winning entry, and the winner of
the Lena Vaughn Award will be invited to display his or her winning
entry at our issue launch party in the spring.
